«Identify! » in Dubrovnik

The International Commission on Missing Persons (ICMP) and the Ars Aevi Center of Contemporary Art Sarajevo will on Monday present series of appeal posters under the title „Identify” [Srebrenica: Podrinje Identification Project], at the Otok Gallery in Dubrovnik. Authors of the posters are members of the creative team „Ideologija” from Sarajevo. This exhibition is part of the „War crimes, genocide and memories” course organized by the Inter University Center. The opening will take place:Monday, 8 May 2006, at 19:00,
at the Otok Gallery, Art workshop Lazareti, Frana Supila 8, Dubrovnik, Croatia.

Survivors from Srebrenica shall also attend the opening. The exhibition is open until 14 May 2006.

The «Identify!» projects shows the significance of ICMP’s experts from the Podrinje Identification Project (PIP) who have through many years of their mission worked persistently on identification of victims of genocide committed in July 1995 in Srebrenica. Up to 8,000 men and boys where killed in a week by Serb forces under the command of General Ratko Mladic, indicted by the UN Tribunal in The Hague, who’s still at large.

Marking the tenth anniversary of the fall of Srebrenica, these appeal posters were placed on billboards and illuminated advertisement boards throughout Sarajevo in July 2005. Thousands of postcards with thus message were distributed in the country and abroad. The concept of selection of clothing from the PIP Books of photos is focused to garments with labels of famous European and world manufacturers, indirectly points to the phenomenon of social and psychological basis which encourage and initiate the process of mass empathy and identification.

Messages of the “Identify!” project are numerous: identify-recognize yourself in relation with the suffering of your neighbors, identify-recognize that collective empathy is repeated in the case of killings of non-Christian habitants of Europe, identify-recognize the meaningless of signs which „help” us feel closer to other men…

Co-hosts/organizers of the project are: ICMP PIP, Federal Commission for Tracing Missing Persons, ICRC, Red Cross Society of BiH, Association „Mothers of Srebrenica and Zepa Enclaves”, Sarajevo, Association „Women of Srebrenica” Tuzla, Association „Srebrenica Mothers”, Tuzla. The project was implemented in the production by Ars Aevi-Ideologija.
