In response to the overwhelming problem of identification of victims of the December 2004 Asian tsunami, Thailand, the United Kingdom and Germany asked ICMP for assistance in the identification of 8,000 victims. ICMP obtained DNA profiles for more than 1,700 bone samples sent by the Thai authorities and issued 902 DNA match reports related to identifying a missing person.

ICMP has extended similar assistance to the Maldives with financial support received from INTERPOL.
